Washington demanded a very clean appearance for his soldiers, which meant the necessity of many women to do the laundry. If a soldier was scolded for slovenly appearance, he might turn that anger back around on you. Normally, the men would have a woman from within their camp circle do the laundry- a wife or sister of one of the soldiers in their company. However, based on the smell of the garments just handed to you and based on the look of destitution in his eyes, you can tell that he hasn't had a woman close to him for a long time.
This man is likely among the men who believe that laundry is a womanly chore, and who would never be caught doing it themselves. Even if it meant smelling like rot. You've seen soldiers with uniforms that looks like they might start to fall apart, they haven't been cleaned or kept up in so long. As for the smell, it's not the worst you'll encounter at camp.
You step into an in ironic situation here at camp: you are responsible for the clothes of the soldiers, yet you don't have the ability to maintain your own appearance much. Clothing items aren't often included in the rations, and the small wages you receive for this washing work needs to go to more essential goods, like food.
As you boil up the water and get the laundry ready to be cleaned, you glance around camp at the women who have been here longer than you. They are all wearing mismatched clothes: pieces of garments strung together unnaturally, likely to keep out the cold, poorly sewn stitches and hem lines, and even some items that look like mens' garments.
New clothing items are nearly impossible to find in camp, so some of your fellows have taken to rifling through mens' baggage while they are away to find any spare clothing items to steal. If they get caught stealing, they will undoubtedly be drummed out of camp, so you don't risk it. At least not while you still have a full gown on your back.
Although the camp women around you are thought of only as pests without virtue, most of the women you have met so far are not so vile. They are mostly just normal women who are trying to survive and trying to see to the needs of their husbands and sons.
